"Nothing's gonna change my world."
Song: Across the Universe by The Beatles
For the Lyrical Illustration project I chose to convey an abstract song from the Beatles because the lyrics allow you to use you imagination.
I chose to use a hand drawn look for my design and gave it a watercolor feel. At first I was having trouble achieving the surrealistic style I desired, but then I used Live Trace to bring my sketch into Illustrator, and it helped me a lot. I also used a pen tablet which I have never done before, but it was perfect since I am more comfortable with pen and paper.
I chose to use very pale and neutral tones, so that the little color that I did use around the guy in the foreground pops. My idea is that although there is hardship, disaster, and darkness all around him, the figure is still able to maintain and protect the happiness that he has in his "world." The light around him acts as a forcefield, repelling the rain, and allowing the plant life to thrive, just as he too is thriving in the light.
Overall, I was able to convey the image I had originally sketched, so that made me happy. The key to a design like this for me is layers. I love using layers and labeling them all because it keeps my design well organized and manageable.
